a few thoughts on freelancing

1 March 2010 No Comment

homeI was thinking alot about the concept of do what you love, love what you do… and more specifically about how I need to be reminded of that sometimes with the freelance design work that I do. I really do love what I get to do for work and I love getting to work with the clients that I have now – Don’t get me wrong. But, working for yourself – especially as a graphic artist – Gets pretty demanding if you want to succeed in your own business. You really have to get yourself invested in the client’s interests and believe that what you have to offer them is going to increase business/awareness/self-image/etc. in whatever is going to help the client succeed in what they hired you to do.

I need to always be reminded to see the work I do – from the client’s vantage point.

You have to really think outside yourself for a minute and give in to learning about what will get you excited about working on this project- The chance for burn-out is just to strong – you have to put yourself into the client’s shoes. After all, I am supposed to be the creative mind, right? I have to interpret what is needed for each job and in turn communicate that back visually, to the client. I can’t forget that I am not simply a graphic designer, but a graphic artist as well. I guess that’ s something you learn with experience.
